  1. Dial-Up Connections stop Auto-dialing after removing Internet Explorer.
Under some conditions that depend on the state of the client machine, the removal of Internet Explorer stops autodial from functioning. Ensure you have the Internet Options Control Panel applet installed and use the Connections Tab to re-set your Autodial parameters. Ensure that you have set one dial-up account to be your Default, and select "Always dial my default connection". You may also like to reinstall the Connection Manager if you removed it but his should be optional. You can also apply this Autodial.inf file (save to disk, right click on icon and select "install") but this is included in the IE removal process and so should be redundant.

  2. Cant get SUSPEND off the Sleek/98Micro Windows95 Start Menu.
This only occurs with certain APM enabled machines running the Windows95 shell on Windows 98

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Enum\Root\*PNP0C05\0000

Set APMMenuSuspend to 00 instead of 01

an alternative approach is to disable APM under windows and let your BIOS handle the Power Management.

More modern machines use ACPI (advanced configuration power interface) instead of APM. However, the Windows 95 Explorer is not ACPI aware.

To hide the Suspend menu item you can create the APM registry key manually in Regedit and add the Binary flag.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    Enum\Root\*PNP0C05\0000

    Binary Value: APMMenuSuspend = 00

The next time you reboot, Windows98 may detect and install the "Advanced Power Management" system device into the device manager where it should co-exist with your ACPI system devices. On testing here we found no ill effects. You can disable the "Advanced Power Management" device in the device manager if you are concerned about APM possibly conflicting with ACPI. As far as Explorer is concerned, it will hide the Suspend option on the Start menu as long as it can find the registry above and it doesnt matter if the device is disabled or enabled

  3. I want to pull the 3 win95 files from a win95 CDROM manually!
Use this INF utility: 95Extract.inf. Right click, save to disk - then right click on the 95Extract.inf file and choose "Install" from the context menu. It will pull the files from your Windows 95 CDROM and place them in a local folder called 95files. This script was written for Win95 95a, OSR2.0, 2.1 and assumes Explorer.exe and Shell32.dll are in Win95_17.cab, and comdlg32.dll is in Win95_16.cab. You can edit the file in a text editor should you find you need to change the numbers.

  4. SLEEK, 98micro: Pie Charts in Windows 95 Explorer disk properties do not display drive sizes greater than 2 gig.
This is a Microsoft BUG that is hard-coded into the Windows 95 Explorer.exe such that it doesn't display the pie-chart correctly whenever the free-space or used space exceeds 2GB. However the corresponding values above the pie-chart are always showing correct sizes as will any other explorer or third-party display-tools. This is cosmetic only, ignore it if you can!

  5. BSOD "Invalid VxD dynamic link call from AUDDRV(05)"
You may see something similar to this bluescreen error when loading 98lite on a Notebook that employs an ESS AudioDrive ISA sound chip."Invalid VxD dynamic link call from AUDDRV(05) + 00002C82 to device "357E", Service 2. Your Windows configuration is invalid. Run the Windows SEtup program again to correct this problem. To continue running Windows press Y or ENTER. To quit the current program press N. If you continue running Windows, your system may become unstable. Do you want to continue?"To fix this you need to replace the default Microsoft audio driver with the ESStech AudioDrive native 95/98 driver. This problem lies with the Microsoft code.

Has been reported for ES1688, ES1788

  6. Black stripe in place of "Millennium" graphic on Windows Me Start-Menu.
With the Windows Millennium Explorer, the Start Menu graphic will not be displayed unless there are enough icons on the main menu to make the menu "tall" enough for the graphic to be displayed in its entirety. A clean 98lite install installs without adding any icons, and if you remove the PC Health feature you actually loose the "Help" icon making the menu even shorter. The graphic will reappear once you place some icons above default icons on the main menu.

  7. Millennium: Why does 98lite reboot TWICE when shellswapping now?
In Windows Millennium, 98lite forces a reboot to disable the system file protection (SFP) feature (see MS Q253571 for details). 98lite then performs the shell swap. The second reboot allows windows to copy over the shell files that were in use during the file copy phase of the shellswap proceedure. If you have removed the PC Health feature of Windows Me with 98lite prior to the shell swap then you will only reboot ONCE.

  8. Explorer is missing the right pane that contains the folder contents
The files pane is still there, but the divider has been moved to the left beyond the width of the current window. To restore the divider to the correct location just make the window as wide as you can and drag it back. Normally just maximising the window is enough. In a sever case you can temporarily increase you screen resolution (so you can make the window bigger), or alternatively don't maximise the window at all - just drag it wider, move the entire windows part way off the screen to make more room, and then drag it wider still until you see the divider. Grab the divider by single clicking on it with the mouse and while holding the mouse button down drag the divider back to the correct location
