Clean setup conditions - how to beat apparently random errors during setup.

by LitePC

Some people are finding their win98 CDROMs are getting dirty with age and the setup files 98lite copies to the hard drive have become corrupted during the copy process.

CLEAN YOUR CDROMS!!

To get a clean setup folder you can follow these guidelines - assuming you have windows loaded.

(1) Start windows and find the folder that you installed 98lite to - the default with 98lite is c:\98setup

(2) Delete this folder entirely (we'll go from scratch here).

(3) Download the files from our server again and save the files you download to your desktop. You should grab the 98lite Professional file (98pro47.exe) and also the 3 Win95 files that are on the same download page (95explorer.zip) - get them again even if you have them.

(4) DoubleClick on 98pro47 and follow the prompts. Enter your key code and then unpack the files to the default directory c:\98setup.

(5) close any windows that are open when the file unpacking is finished.

(6) now unzip the files from 95explorer.zip and place them into c:\98setup.

--- at this point you should have a folder called c:\98setup that has the three win95 files in it and also the 98lite files.

(7) close any windows that are open

(8) open the c:\98setup folder in explorer and double click on 98lite.exe.

(9) follow the prompts. It will ask you for you win98 CDROM and will copy the files it needs to the hard drive into the same folder that 98lite was run from.

--- at this point you should have a single folder called c:\98setup that has the three win95 files in it and also the 98lite files and now a bunch of windows setup files that end with .CAB amonst others.

You can also make the folder this way just manually copying files under windows explorer - but you need to make sure you have clean copies of everything to be on the safe side.

You can substitute a different path for "c:\98setup" in the above if you want the setup location on a different drive.

(10) If 98lite did not automatically finish the job after copying the files from the CDROM just open the c:\98setup folder in explorer and and double click on 98lite.exe.

Don't use you old files that you had before this.

Also dont use any shortcuts to 98lite that you may have on your startmenu from you previous install. Open the folders and click on the files. This ensures that you are indeed running the version you think you are - 98lite will update you startmenu links if it needs to.

You should now have a clean setup folder.
